How do plants react to light levels?

All tropical plants require ample light from either a natural or artificial source, for healthy growth.
In poor light conditions plants try to adapt but won’t achieve their optimum. They will live of their energy reserves and gradually die. As their energy expires they become unable to absorb sufficient energy to regain health.

Light regulates 3 plant processes.

  1. Photosynthesis – Plants transform light energy into food energy - They use light energy, carbon dioxide and water to interact with the green pigment, chlorophyll to produce plant sugars and oxygen, which is released into the atmospheres.
  2. Phototropism – The natural inclination of plants to grow towards a light source, either a window or artificial light.
  3. Photoperiodism – Plants perform best in a rhythmic cycle of light and darkness, preferably resembling their natural habitat.
Sick office syndrome

A research study by NASA revealed that enclosed interior environments can contain large amounts Formaldehyde Benzene and other harmful gases. These gases plus toxins from furnishings and electronic equipment can affect employee health. A condition known as “Sick Office Syndrome”.

The study also demonstrated that through photosynthesis (a plants own natural oxygen production) removes much of these potentially harmful gases and toxins. Quality, maintained green foliage plants can increase worker production and help staff feel less stressed and more attentive.
